Faith walk: Live it

Tom Izzo is the Head Coach of the Michigan State Spartans basketball program. He was asked recently what type of players he likes to recruit that will make his team successful. Coach Izzo replied; “I believe there are three types of players: those that like it, those that love it and those that live it. We want the ones who live it”.

Jesus gave us many teachings in His ministry. Although he didn’t teach on “like”, He spoke frequently about love. The most well-known scripture is John 3:16. Jesus clearly teaches on the unconditional love of God for everyone.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (ESV)

The interesting thing about Coach Izzo’s criteria for recruitment of players is the idea of finding the ones who not only love it but “live it”.

In this world today, it is so important for people of faith not to simply “like” the idea of God and His goodness. And, as important as love is to give and receive to and from others, there is a higher standard we should strive to meet.

As Coach Izzo said about basketball players, we as believers need to “LIVE IT”. People we encounter everyday are struggling with addictions, family disfunction, depression, anger and many other challenges. We may be the one source of goodness, kindness or hopefulness that someone may see that day.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:14 that we are the “light of the world”. He is giving us clear instruction to “live it out” in our everyday lives. As we go through the motions and routines of life, we have an opportunity to “live” in a way that shows the light of life, Jesus.

Take a moment today to think about how you might not only “love” like Jesus, although that is a great thing, but “LIVE” like Him in everything you do. When we do this, there will be a light shining brightly into all the lives of those around us. And when that happens, people will be drawn to the “light of life”, Jesus.
