Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States said, “It's amazing what you can accomplish when you do not care who gets the credit.”
Jesus lived His life that way. He modeled servanthood and taught it to His followers. The Gospels contain much truth about Jesus. They detail how He came from heaven, born as a human child, grew up, did miraculous things in ministry, and gave Himself up as a sacrifice so that we could be freed from sin.
Everything about Jesus is amazing! He was the only blameless human being that ever lived. That makes Him our perfect example in every aspect of life.
One of the most shocking and beautiful things about Jesus was the posture in which He lived. Being God Himself in the flesh, He had every right to live a privileged life and demand the worship of humanity. But Matthew 20:28 says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Think about that! This is opposite of what the world believes.
Jesus lived to serve others. He didn’t choose the easy road, filling His life with luxuries and putting others in servitude to Him. Instead, He gave up all those rights He deserved to pour everything He had into serving others. Throughout the course of the Gospels, we continuously see Jesus traveling throughout the land healing people and meeting their needs.
He has called us to continue His work in the world. That’s why we are the hands and feet of Jesus! We must redefine what we consider success in this life. In Matthew 23:11-12, Jesus says, “The greatest among you must be a servant. But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (NLT).
Success by God’s standards is not about how much money we make or how prominent we are in society. Success in God’s eyes is all about our heart toward others and how we serve them.
Don’t worry about achieving greatness by the world’s standards. Strive to seek greatness according to God’s standards, and you will be exalted, both in this life and in eternity.
