Christmas is a very special season. There is something for everyone to experience in the events and atmosphere of this unique time of the year.

This is the time when we celebrate the birth of a baby whose life changed the entire world. At His birth, hosts of angels filled the sky proclaiming the miracle. Among the many who came to worship Him were the Wise Men who traveled a far distance from the East. They came to Bethlehem because they were convinced that a new King had been born.

When the Wise Men stopped on their journey at the palace of King Herod, they told him of the birth of a new king. This highly alarmed Herod. He told these men to come back and let him know the particulars of this new king’s birth and where he could be found. Herod’s intention was to kill the new baby to protect his own throne.

As the Wise Men continued following their guiding star, they finally arrived at Bethle-hem. When they saw the baby, they worshipped Him and presented Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrr. (It is from these three named gifts that we make the assumption that there were three Wise Men. The Bible never mentions the number of them.)

Look at how carefully God plans. An angel appeared to them and warned them to return home by a different route avoiding King Herod and likely saving their lives. Then, to save the life of the Baby, Jesus, an angel appeared to Joseph and warned him to leave Bethlehem and journey to Egypt. He told Joseph to stay there until he returned and informed him it was safe for the little family to return to their Homeland.

How could a poor family like Joseph’s afford such things. They had a long trip to Egypt; they had to live once they arrived there; they had to be sustained in Egypt for as much as two years; then they had to make a return journey to their home. The Wise Men had brought the gift of gold as well as the other expensive gifts of frankincense and myrr. They had enough for their whole ordeal!
