KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – Feeding Northeast Florida continued its Harvest Helpings initiative in Clay County. In partnership with Winn-Dixie and the Winn-Dixie Gives Foundation, FNEFL recently provided 200 turkeys for those in need at the Mission on the Dirt Road distribution in Keystone Heights.
Food insecurity affects approximately one in four adults in Northeast Florida. With the additional challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for food resources has nearly doubled in 2020. Through the Harvest Helpings initiative, FNEFL distributed not only fresh produce and dry goods, but turkeys and all the fixings for the upcoming holiday. Area partner Mission on the Dirt Road was involved in the distribution process, choosing recipients to surprise and delight this holiday season.
“Food insecurity is a year-round problem, but the holidays are a terrible time to be without,” said Sarah Hall, Director of Partnership & Programs with Feeding Northeast Florida. “We are thankful for Winn-Dixie’s partnership to make these donations possible and help bring some holiday cheer to our neighbors in Clay County.”
“Winn-Dixie cares passionately about the communities we serve, and we know that this year has been a difficult time for many families,” said Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer of Southeastern Grocers. “We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with Feeding Northeast Florida to support our communities both inside and outside of our stores by providing cherished holiday meals for North Florida neighbors in need.”
In an effort to minimize COVID-19 exposure, the distribution was set up as a drive-through, with recipients asked to stay in their cars while volunteers loaded food. All volunteers followed proper protocols from the CDC, including wearing masks and keeping social distance.
