OAKLEAF – Fleming Island and Keystone Heights high schools won their respective boys weightlifting district titles with Baker County again dominating against Clay, Ridgeview and Orange Park high schools in that district staged Saturday at Baker County High School. Region meets are scheduled for March 29-30 in various sites; Oakleaf for region 2-2A, Keystone Heights for region 5-1A and Suwannee High for region 3-1A.

In district 4-2A, Fleming Island, with three individual champions, edged out Oakleaf, 50-45, with the Knights also putting up three champions. Bartram Trail was third at 35, Creekside fourth at 27 and Middleburg fifth at 21. Nease, St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra finished the district field.

In district 6-1A, Baker County garnered six titles for the team title with Ridgeview snagging one and Orange Park snagging two. For the Panthers, Ralando Grey won at 139 pounds to return to the state meet . Orange Park got titles from Zykeim Sermons at 183 and David Araujo at 199. Araujo, who amassed a 655 total to beat Baker County’s Brandon Combs by just five pounds, was a state meet qualifier in 2018. Combs edged Araujo by five pounds; 610-505, to finish fourth at 199 last year with Araujo fifth.

In district 9-1A, Keystone Heights, with an astounding eight individual champions, took their district with 96 points to runnerup North Marion’s 44 and Eastside at 27 at third. Interlachen, Oak Hall, Bronson and Cedar Key finished out that district’s field. For the Golden Eagles, titles came from Will Stephens at 139 edged out Bartram Trail’s Joseph Governara, 450-440, for totals with Governara beating Stephens by 30 in the bench, but Stephens upping Governara by 40 in the clean and jerk.

At 169, Fleming Island’s Andrew Thomas dominated that field with a 625 total with teammate Broden Domenico second with a distant 535. Thomas crushed the weight class with a 335 bench press and a 290 clean and jerk.

At 238, junior Jeremiah ‘Bus’ Jackson won by more than 100 pounds with a 645 total with 300-plus pounds on both disciplines; 330 on bench and 315 on clean and jerk.

For Oakleaf, at 119, Michael Williams edged out Fleming Island’s Ian Ali 205-195 with Ali missing on his last two clean and jerk attempts to stay with Williams.

At 183, Tayari Otis won for the Knights with a 560 total to edge Ponte Vedra’s Mark Calvin by just 10 pounds. Calvin bested Otis on the bench with both missing their second and third attempts with Otis going 275-250 in the clean and jerk.

At 199, Oakleaf sophomore Kevin Davis punched in at 630 to win over St. Augustine’s Connor Quinney by 55 pounds. Davis had one of the best benches of all classes at 340 pounds.

In the Unlimiteds, Middleburg junior Cole LeClair put up 335 in the bench at 235 in clean and jerk to win with 570 by just five pounds over Nease’s Nicholas Thoresen.

Keystone Heights dominated with titles to Zachary Glover at 119, Holden Knapp at 129, Ulysses Freed at 139, Colton Tibbetts at 154, Mike Kirtley at 169, Josh Hughes at 219, Carter Semione at 238 and Dan Dodd at Unlimited. Dodd was most impressive with a 715 total with a 380 bench and a 335 clean and jerk.
