FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island has had its share of extra inning games with recent wins in nine innings over Ridgeview and Ponte Vedra and the trend continued with a 9-7 win over Bishop Kenny (3-2) in 12 innings and a 1-0 loss to Creekside (5-2) last week. Fleming Island ended the week with a 10-6 win over St. Joseph Academy (3-3).
Fleming Island, now 5-1, snagged a triple by Aiden Mastantuno after a Drew Homitz single to beat Bishop Kenny in the 12th inning while, against Creekside, both teams were scoreless until the sixth inning when Creekside got a single and grounder to advance baserunner Chris Romano to second base. A grounder to third baseman Marcus Murray was the difference maker that put Farid Eijaiek on third. Connor Hults singled to score Eijaiek.
For Fleming Island, Cody Carwile went the distance against Creekside with five strikeouts while Hults dominated the Fleming Island batting lineup with 14 strikeouts and just one walk and one hit.
Justin Lebesch had Fleming Island lone hit on the night while Jack Gidcumb got to first being hit by a Hults pitch. Carwile was Hults' lone walk.
Against Bishop Kenny, the Crusaders blasted the first inning for three runs and held a lead of 5-2 into the fifth inning before Fleming Island put four runs on the scoreboard in the sixth.
Fleming Island utilized five pitchers with Dylan Dudones starting, but getting evicted after the three-run first inning for Isaac Williams. Williams struck out eight in his four innings with Divine Valle and Connor Smith both pitching an inning of relief before Mastantuno finished the final five with nine strikeouts. Bishop Kenny also went through five pitchers on the night.
Bishop Kenny got their early lead on a handful of walks, singles and a double before Fleming Island answered with Scott Kondroik and Jack Gidcumb both hitting doubles for one run in the second inning.
Down 5-1, Fleming Island got singles from Gidcumb and Gavin Billingsley and an error to close the score to 5-3 in the fourth. Singles from Murray and Kondroik made the score 5-4 in the fifth before Bishop Kenny. Valle got nailed for two singles, two walks and an error to a 7-4 Crusader lead. Fleming Island ended the inning with a double play from Lebesch to Billingsley at second who nailed a baserunner at home plate.
Tyler Cross doubled and scored off a Mastantuno double for a 7-6 score with Lebesch singling in front of a Gidcumb grounder and error that scored two runs to put Fleming Island up 8-7.
Bishop Kenny executed two double plays to snuff out Fleming Island baserunners in the latter innings before Mastantuno's b gamewinning blast.
