PENNEY FARMS – Pet Florida is a local humanitarian enterprise located in the Clay County community of Penney Farms. The name is an acronym that stands for Personal Energy Transportation, describing their unique hand-powered cart produced there for disabled recipients all over the world at no charge. The organization will donate one of its handcrafted vehicles similar to one that was delivered to a boy in Kenya to help those with disabilities at the Clay County Agricultural Fair. Sparked by the vision of retired missionary and Penney Farms resident Larry Hills in 2001, the cart answered a need he frequently witnessed in Africa for people who were unable to walk and left to literally crawl in the dirt. Once the cart was designed and production began here, nearly 13,000 have been assembled and shipped by a crew of unpaid volunteers from Penney Farms and nearby communities.
