ORANGE PARK - With 19 strikeouts by pitcher Brad Hodges, the St. Johns Country Day School baseball team beat University Christian 8-0 to win the district 2-3A championship. St. Johns got back-to-back homers in the fourth inning from Tyler Kuramoto and Tyce Moore and a two run shot from Connor Moore in the fifth inning.

“We were unbeaten and unscored upon in all of our district games this year and were expecting that tonight,” said St. Johns coach Tom Lucas, now 19-7 and hosting Tallahassee Maclay (14-13) on Tues, May 14 in their region 1-1A quarterfinal. University Christian (10-13) travels to face North Florida Christian (20-6). NFC is the Class 1A runnerup; losing 6-1 to Canterbury.

Hodges, who opened the game with three strikeouts to set a tone for the night, kept the momentum in the second inning with another three strikeout stanza. University Christian did get a groundout in the third inning with Hodges again bashing three strikeouts in the fourth.

University Christian got to third base in the sixth inning after Hodges hit a batter, but Hodges responded with two strikeouts and a groundout. Hodges finished the seventh inning with three strikeouts.
