Jags lose Foles; and game
JACKSONVILLE - A driving tackle after a touchdown throw spelled doom to the Jacksonville Jaguars as quarterback Nick Foles fell to a broken clavicle to which the Jaguars eventually lost 40-26 to the Kansas City Chiefs in TIAA Field on Sunday.
Foles hit wideout D.J.Chark, Jr., with a 35 yard scoring pass with 5:23 left in the first quarter, but got smashed to the turf by Chiefs' defensive tackle Chris Jones, 311 pounds, on his left shoulder.
With Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the league's MVP last year with 50 touchdowns, scorched the Jaguar secondary thanks to three scores to wideout Sammy Watkins, the first on the second play of the game.
“We gave up too many big plays,” Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said. “They did a nice job. They made the plays. They were able to get behind us and by us.”
On the positive end of the game, rookie quarterback Gardner Minshaw II, the Jaguars top draft choice out of Washington State University, came in and played exceptionally with 22 of 25 passes and two scores to get the Jaguars within a 23-13 halftime gap.
In the final stats, the Chiefs put up 491 yards of offense, but Minshaw and Foles finished with 428 yards of total offense.
Minshew hit wide out Dede Westbrook with a 15 yard score, his first NFL scoring pass, to cut the lead to 37-19 with his second coming to Chris Conley as the final two minutes ticked away.
The Jaguars travel to play the Houston Texans on 1 p.m. on Sunday.
