ORANGE PARK – Ironically, two Spartans; St. Johns Country Day School senior track and cross country ace Benjamin Kailes and SPARTAN racer Sharon Hawley, a noted SPARTAN adventure racer, emerged as winners at the Hula Hustle 5K road race held Saturday at St. Johns Country Day School.
Kailes, a senior at St. Johns, bested the field with a 16 minute, 34 second trek around the Lakeside area with Hawley, 32, top female finisher in 20:40 for sixth overall.
Kailes finished ahead of Nick Burvee, 24, who ran 18:31 with River Bethke, 19, third at 18:53.
Behind Hawley was veteran road racer Jessica Jewell, 37, at 21:23 and Fleming Island High freshman Allie Knotts, 13, in 21:51.
Master’s awards went grudgingly to Millie Thrasher, 47, in 24:11 and Mike Sperry, 54, in 20:12.
Age group awards for females from youngest to oldest were Kailey Hawley, 9; Gabby Michael, 11; Melinda Peacock, 16; Cortni Sant, 24; Natalie Fina, 29; Jhenai Chandler, 31; Sarah Trudell, 37; Gayle Garrison, 43; Cinzia Rothrock, 46; Tracy Pfuntner, 53; Wendy Nines, 55; Susan Romanelli, 60; Pat Trudell, 66, and Marsha Carter, 70.
Age group awards for males from youngest to oldest were Kaiden Garcia, 10; Cole Fleming, 13; Connor Henry, 16; Sean Mason, 29; Sean Carson, 33; William Lowe, 35; Shane Hernandez, 40; Rick Nelson, 49; Daryl Blackstock, 50; Alfanso Solano, 59; Dana Butterfield, 61; Jack Owens, 67, and James Keegan, 71.
Next races are the Running of the Knights 5K on May 10 at Creekside High School and the Fleming Island 5K and Maddi’s Mile at Fleming Island High School on Sat, May 18.
Orange Park will also host a Memorial Day 5K.
