JACKSONVILLE - Fleming Island High's girls cross country team got a three-pack of sub-20 minute finishers against a strong field to take second place overall in the elite division of the Katie Caples Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at Bishop Kenny High School.

With Grace Adams emerging as the top finisher just four seconds ahead of Emma Millson and Mei Chiang sneaking under the 20 minute mark, the Golden Eagles girls team showed off a strong front of pack running to finish second team overall behind Bolles. Bolles had four runners in the top 10 to win with 39 points with Fleming Island second at 97 just ahead of Oak Hall, third at 104. St. Augustine, with individual champion Reilly Barber again smoking the field with her 18 minute, two second split, finished fourth.

For the Golden Eagles, Adams, at 19:23, and Millson, at 19:27, rumbled in at eighth and ninth with Chiang, at 19:56, 19th. Marisa Kortright hit the 20:00 mark for 22nd with Anna Rafalski the fifth finisher at 20:50 for 39th.

Bolles had finishers at second, fourth, sixth and 10th.

Oakleaf High's girls team finished 14th led by Taylor Silkert's 20:38 for 33rd place.

For the boys elite race, St. Johns Country Day School's Matthew Stratton got to see his top state meet opponent in Austin Montini of Oak Hall. Montini edged Stratton at last year's Class 1A championship race.

At Katie Caples, Montini strode away late in the race to win in 15:40 with Mac Updike of Lake Wales and Stratton battling for the runneup spot. Updike had the edge at the finish line taking second in 15:58 with Stratton just two secons behind.

In the team points, Bolles with three in the top 10 to win with 44 points with Ponte Vedra and Oak Hall finishing the top three. Fleming Island, led by Jayden Scherer's 16:48, took fourth with 117 points. John Keester IV and Michael Lyon finished 19th and 20th for the Golden Eagles.

In the open boys race, Ridgeview's Dominik Frietze, Oakleaf's Graham Myers and Clay's Carlton Waiguru took eighth, ninth and 12th as top finishers in 18:17, 18:31 and 18:36 with St. Johns Country Day School's Richard Nichols finishing 16th in 19:03.

For the girls, St. Johns' Rebecca Stratton took the biggest race to have her best time at 22:29 to take seventh with teammate Evelyn Hanson just behind at 22:44 for eighth. Also in the top 20 were, for Clay, Ulyana Damme at 13th in 22:49 and Kaygen Williams at 17th in 23:48. St. Johns' Sofia Conde was 20th in 23:59.

Area teams will be at Ridgeview High for the Bob Hans Invitational, moved from early September due to the COVID pandemic.
