Knights’ offense: Simmons with targets galore
OAKLEAF – Oakleaf High football has relied on the arm of quarterback Walter Simmons for the past two years with a playoff berth earned last year and 2019 looks to be even more productive as the Knights pass catching corps showed out in a passing scrimmage against Atlantic Coast High on Tues., July 16.
Simmons, with 30-plus touchdown passes last year for then first year coach Frank Garis, moved efficiently on the run as he hit wide outs Sean Washington, Donovan Thomas and Terrance Anthony, all returners from last year’s region playoff squad throughout the fast-paced scrimmage.
Washington looked to be Simmons top target with a handful of crossing patterns getting a 10-12 catch with added yardage with Washington’s breakaway speed.
In a late series of downs, Simmons found Thomas for a 70 yard fly pattern that hit paydirt against the very athletic Atlantic Coast secondary.
On the Knights’ defense, with Christian Sellers manning the center safety position, Atlantic Coast stayed close to the sidelines with cornerback T.J. Trevyn Smith getting an interception and also a near-miss on a pass deflection by Thomas.
Oakleaf moves to a new district in 2019 with District 1-8A including Bartram Trail (7A last year, 7-3), Mandarin (8A champions last year), Nease (6A last year, 3-8) and Sandalwood (8A last year 7-3).
