Lady Broncos welcome rugged schedule to playoffs
MIDDLEBURG – Middleburg High volleyball coach Carrie Prewitt has never been one to shy away from putting her Lady Broncos squad to the test with a schedule that is unrelenting.
“We never have had what I would call an easy schedule,” said Prewitt, during a final tryout day at Middleburg High School on Wed., July 31. “This year, our schedule is brutal.”
Evidence of the “brutal” nature of the schedule is in the first six games of the regular season that features Bartram Trail (8A region semifinals in 2018), Spruce Creek (9A region semifinals in 2018), Episcopal (5A Final Four finisher in 2018), Leon (8A Final Four, beat Fleming Island in region final in 2018), Ocala Forest (7A region semifinals in 2018), Nease (district runnerup to Middleburg, lost in region quarterfinals) and Ponte Vedra (6A region semifinals in 2018).
Middleburg does start play at the annual Bishop Kenny Preseason Invitational. Bishop Kenny was a 6A Final Four finisher last year.
Last year, the Broncos (15-12) stayed even with Nease in the district 3-7A run, but fell abruptly to Ocala Forest in the region quarterfinals. Middleburg overcame two regular season losses to Nease before upending them for the district title. Middleburg will drop to a new district 3-5A in 2019 with Paxon, Ridgeview, Stanton, Orange Park, Lee and Westside. Ridgeview has won three straight district titles from district 4-6A with Stanton a perennial first round region playoff opponent. .
Top returners for Prewitt include seniors Britany Range and Mikayla Simmons with sophomore Jenna Sypniewski a freshman sensation last year.
Prewitt loses multi-talented players Mallory Roney, Haley Wadsworth and Jillian Bemis, but does add 6’-2” basketball ace Skylar Baltezegar, a junior, to the mix as a presence at the net. Senior Mone Gordon also adds some height to the mix at 5’-11”.
“We will have two junior varsity teams instead of a freshman squad because there are not a lot of freshman tournaments,” said Prewitt. “We have a good group of taller athletes, much more than in the recent past.”
