JACKSONVILLE – To go from a good team to a great team everything matters. Oakleaf head Coach Christy Thompson knows that all too well.

“We have to do the little things right all the time, “ said Thompson. “We need to execute on our bunts and hustle out of the box with every ball we hit.”

Senior righty Madi Davis threw a complete game giving up three hits, struck out nine, and walked two while Katie Kistler had a two RBI single and scored a run to propel Oakleaf to a 3-1 victory over host Atlantic Coast.

The Knights, who are ranked nationally, move to 13-1 on the season and now have won six straight games. The Stingrays drop to 8-5 on the season. Oakleaf avenged an early season 9-8 home loss to Atlantic Coast on March 7th.

Davis, who threw a total of 77 pitches including 48 for strikes, was masterful on the mound. She sat down the side in three of the seven innings and was overpowering at times.

“Madi really stepped up tonight,” said Thompson. “Early in the game she was going too deep into the counts but made some nice adjustments.”

After the Stingrays tied he score at 1-1 in the bottom of third inning the Knights struck for two runs in the top of the fourth. Jazmine Lamug, Caitlyn Lamug and Jadrianna Serrano each had one out singles to load the bases them Kistler lined a single to left plating the Lamug sisters to move out to a 3-1 lead.

“We want to dominate innings,” said Thompson. “That was a great response from our team.”

Oakleaf pounded out 10 hits on the night including senior 3B Baylee Goddard who went 3-4 with two singles and a double while Kistler was 2-3 and reached on an error.

Atlantic Coast didn’t get a base runner past second base over the last four innings. Davis induced four pop-outs and recorded five strikeouts over those frames to close out the Stingrays.

Oakleaf beat unbeaten Mandarin in extra innings on Friday.

The Lady Knights head to the Kissimmee Klassic Tournament for four days of competition against state and nationally ranked teams.
