GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Lake Asbury Junior High delivered seven individual champions en route to a tight battle with Lakeside for the Cougar Growl/Clay County Junior High Wrestling Invitational held Saturday at Green Cove Springs. Lake Asbury won with 275.5 points with Lakeside second at 210.0 and Green Cove Springs third with 173.0. The next three spots went to Wilkinson, Oakleaf and Orange Park Junior High.

Lake Asbury coach Riley Girgis, a Middleburg High graduate and former wrestler, noted that his Tigers program has not lost in two years and is planning on building this year into another conference title.
"We just keep working hard and competing at every weight class," said Girgis, who took over after Coll Robertson, now at Middleburg. "We want to extend the streak each day in the wrestling room."
Robertson, who mentored Girgis at Lake Asbury, said Lake Asbury got second to Wilkinson two years ago in the county championships and the Northeast Florida Athletic Conference championships, but have kept winning the past two years.
At the Cougar Growl, Lake Asbury got individual titles from Layne Harrell at 85, Hunter Jones at 90, Carter Gaither at 113, Tucker Mills at 120, RJ Alvarez at 144, Hudson Tharp at 165 and Dalton Dickerson at 175.
Lakeside chased the Tigers with firsts two Logan Carroll at 75, Liam Soto at 100, Hudson Reid at 215 and John Cubbero at 285.
Green Cove got titles from Luke Solano at 80, Gage Pickard at 132, Zeke Brockhoff at 138 and Weston Woods Wilkinson got a title to Demarcus Bussey at 126; Oakleaf got a title to Samuel Jean Francois at 95 and Astin Brewer at 106 and Orange Park got a title to Saion Davis at 157.
