FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High lacrosse forward Isabella Marx scored seven goals in the final game of her record-setting high school career as host Fleming Island pulled away in the second half for a 12-4 win over St. Augustine Pedro Menendez on April 9 in the season finale of an outstanding season that finished wiht 11 wins, four losses.

Marx entered the game needing six goals to reach the 100 mark in her Fleming Island career, a milestone she seemed unlikely to reach when she tallied just one in the first half. But the senior attack heated up in the final two quarters, finding the net six times to put the Golden Eagles comfortably ahead and push her total to 101.

“Izzy is one of those players that can really turn it on,” said Fleming Island head coach Chris Peterson. “When that happens, I like to just sit back and watch her take control.”

Quarterbacking the Golden Eagles attack from behind the net, Marx found success with a series of drives around the goal. She now holds the Fleming Island girls lacrosse records for goals in a season, points in a season, career goals and career points.

Fleming Island led 4-0 at halftime. Goaltender Libby Pittman and Katie Townsend kept the Pirates at bay while the Fleming Island offense struggled. Pittman, who finished with 10 saves and a sparkling 57.1 percent save percentage, turned away every Menendez shot in the first half while Townsend put the clamps on Pirates leading scorer Raina Richard.

“Katie is so tough and physical and it make it a great matchup,” said Peterson. “We thought if we could contain Richard then we would have a good chance.”

Maya Dawson scored twice for the Golden Eagles, who end the 2021 season with an 11-4 mark. Fellow seniors Gabby Rochester and Summer Knight each notched one goal, as did sophomore Jillian LaBelle.

Fleming Island’s seven seniors have a special bond with Peterson, being the first group that the fourth-year head coach got to mentor from their freshman year forward.

“I love all of them and they will leave huge shoes to fill,” he said. “They exemplify the tremendous work ethic, dedication and the will to be successful, and to top it off, they are genuinely whole-heartedly good people.”

Fleming Island played this season as an independent, meaning that they will not participate in the FHSAA playoffs. Peterson’s understanding is that in 2022, the Golden Eagles will rejoin the FHSAA, be assigned to a district and participate in the playoffs. Menendez fell to 7-6
