MIDDLEBURG – Three days before the first day of school, about 300 students can receive some last-minute school supplies.
The Middleburg Civic Association and Doc Tony’s chiropractic clinic partnered to provide a backpack giveaway, “Stuff the Bag,” from 11 a.m.-to 2 p.m. on Aug. 10 at 2620 Blanding Blvd., Suite 28 – Doc Tony’s Clay County office.
Attendees can park at Middleburg Elementary and children can start registering at 8:30 a.m. Free school physicals will also be provided.
Paula Cloud is Middleburg Civic Association president and Doc Tony’s general manager. She said the Middleburg Civic Association had about 10-to-12 volunteers at each event, while it needed closer to 25.
Corralling volunteers had been a difficulty, but a few hundred have expressed interest in attending “Stuff the Bag” on social media, Cloud said.
“I know there’s a need to help the community,” she said. “Middleburg and the surrounding area tend to be a bit of a lower income area.”
With rapid growth coming to Middleburg, Cloud said the Middleburg Civic Association was important for partnering with businesses and advocating for the city’s history. The civic association was founded in 1941.
“Now, Middleburg is fixing to go from a small town to this booming area, and you could very well lose the history of it if you don’t stay involved,” Cloud said. “That’s what the civic association is still about.”
The Middleburg Lions Club is sponsoring free vision screenings during the event. Lions Club President Ed Dickson said each screening would take between five and seven minutes. The Lions Club has screened about 60 people so far this year, he added.
“We look forward to working events like the one on [Aug. 10] because it’s for people across the community and we would get a chance to help as many people as we can,” Dickson said.
