MIDDLEBURG – A 31-year-old woman was arrested Monday, July 15, and charged with aggravated child neglect after her 4-year-old child had access to a handgun and accidentally shot herself in the hand on July 10.

Darien Leigh Johns was booked into the Clay County Jail after an investigation by CCSO, the State Attorney’s Office and the Department of Children and Families, Sheriff Michelle Cook said Monday night.

“Our investigators determined there was sufficient evidence to support the arrest of the child’s mother,” Cook said.

John’s bond was set at $50,003.

Cook said the child is expected to make a full recovery. She was released from the hospital on Monday and is in the Department of Children and Families care.

“I do want to thank all of the citizens and, obviously, our partners who came forward with information and assisted us in this matter,” Cook said.
