Carolyn Ann Figueroa, age 76, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2021 at home with her devoted family by her side.
Born to the late Kenneth Paul and Una Mae (nee: Robison) LaRue in Providence, Rhode Island, she was raised in Green Cove Springs, Florida. She attended Barry College in Miami, Florida and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. After moving to Santiago, Chile to work as an English teacher at Santiago College, she met the love of her life, Hector, whilst on a train trip to the south of Chile.
After she returned to Rochester, New York, Hector soon followed. They got married and as she completed a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Rochester, New York, they began their family with the birth of Tom. A year after Katie was born, they moved their growing family back to Santiago, Chile, where Andrea and Dan were born.
In the years to follow they moved extensively with work and after Hector’s retirement, began to split their time between Miami and Philadelphia.
Carolyn will be remembered as an exemplary human being: selfless, loving, kind, devout, compassionate, cheerful, and full of intellectual curiosity. Many who met her commented, “that woman is a saint!” Even after brief encounters, people remember her kindness years later. She enjoyed learning, reading, asking questions, travelling, laughing, spending time with her family, and most of all, playing with her grandchildren.
Beloved wife of 52 years to Hector Figueroa. Loving mother of Tom (Sally) Figueroa, Katie Figueroa, Andrea Figueroa (Steven Utermark), and Dan (Courtney) Figueroa. Devoted grandma to Sarah, Abigail, Sofia, Maria Teresa, Lucas, Teresa Mae, Mary, Ellie and Elizabeth. Dearest sister to Paul (Barbara) LaRue, Susan (Bruce Falconer) LaRue and Terry (Susan Elizabeth) LaRue. She will also be sadly missed by countless nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends were invited to gather for Gathering at Old Saint Mary’s Church, 252 South 4th St. Phila., PA 19106 from 12:30 on Saturday, May 8, 2021.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated at 1:30 at Old Saint Mary’s. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the St. Joseph’s Shining Little Stars Organization: Starsuganda.networkforgood.com.
