GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Orange Park and Clay high have held formidable positions in weightlifting over the years with the Raiders having a slew of past state champions and the Blue Devils girls teams taking cue from the Clay High Iron Room to win their first-ever title after a dominating year from Clay state champion Isaiah Jones at 129.
In 2022, two lifters; Raider Cam Griffieth and Clay’s Logan Meszaros, emerged from the fray of regions to be in positions for a possible medals chase at the Class 2A championship meet this week.
Also in the mix, Ridgeview’s Chris Baptiste, fifth last year by just 50 pounds in a flurry behind Clay’s Jones at 129, is a whisker away from a medal in a very tight 139 class with just 60 pounds separating top-rank and 10th ranked; Baptiste at 450 total just 15 pounds from a grouping of four lifters locked at 465 with the top total at 515.
Meszaros’ 550 total is 50 away from two lifters at 600 at the top.
For Griffieth, the gap is his 425 versus the top lifter at 455 with three locked at 430.
Middleburg High has Gabe Harp at 169 at ninth ranked after a region title in the Olympic Snatch with his clean and jerk in the top five of the field being a possible difference maker in the end.
