FLEMING ISLAND – Veterans and their families were honored at the Veterans Day ceremony at R.M. Paterson Elementary on Thursday, Nov. 9. Principal John O’Brian expressed gratitude during opening remarks on a pleasant, sunny morning. Four students read from their handwritten, heartfelt essays that expressed admiration and appreciation for the country. Veterans of all branches were in attendance, and each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces was honored with its official marchpast during an Armed Forces Medley. “The Army Goes Rolling Along” was played for the Army; “Anchors Aweigh” for the Navy; “The Marines’ Hymn” and “The Wild Blue Yonder” represented the Air Force, and “Semper Paratus” was played for the Coast Guard. Afterward, a bright orange Coast Guard helicopter circled overhead, with Guardsmen waving to cheering students and their families.
