Pinewood Derby returns to fast lane on Fleming Island

FLEMING ISLAND – For the first time in two years, Cub Scout Pack 812 hit the track with their annual Pinewood Derby races at the Fleming Island United Methodist Church. The children were tasked with creating their own racers from a 7-by-2 inch block of wood, and they competed in runoffs.

“The Pinewood Derby gives our young scouts the chance to build a car completely from scratch,” said Arwen FitzGerald, the Pack 812 Committee Chair. “With the help of an adult, these scouts start with a block of wood and come up with some really creative, and fast, cars.”

Building and designing the cars teach the scouts about woodworking, physics, aerodynamics and more. Racing pinewood derby cars also teaches the young scouts about competition and being a good winner – and loser.

“I really liked watching my friends race their cars,” said Wren FitzGerald, a kindergartner in the pack. “But my favorite part was watching my car win a race.”

Cub Scout Pack 812 is a year-round group that goes on adventures, volunteers and provides fun hands-on learning experiences to girls and boys in kindergarten through fourth grade.”
