Jacksonville man tracked down by K-9 Orie following short chase

 MIDDLEBURG – A Clay County Sheriff’s Office K-9 tracked and apprehended a man that attempted to run from the scene of a short chase and crash on Dec. 13.

Ervin Bailey III, 19, of Jacksonville, was charged with resisting, obstructing or opposing a police officer, attempting to flee police with flashing lights and siren active and driving without a valid license after K-9 Orie ran him down on Copper Gate Drive.

According to the CCSO, the chase started when a deputy estimated the speed on Bailey’s car to be 65 mph in a 35-mph zone at 2:41 a.m. The deputy also noticed the car didn’t have a tag. Bailey and two other defendants tried to drive away from the deputy although he turned on his flashing lights and siren. After swerving along Cooper Gate, the car hit some tree roots and stopped. All three defendants fled, but K-9 Orie managed to catch Bailey, who was the driver.

 

Man goes to jail following 2018 Orange Park drug sting

 ORANGE PARK – A Jacksonville man was arrested after he reportedly sold methamphetamine to a confidential informant working with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Terry Lee Jones Jr., 35, was arrested on Dec. 13 with selling or delivering narcotics. He was held on a $75,003 bond.

According to the arrest report, the informant bought drugs at Jones’ house in 2018. After other buys, an arrest warrant was issued on Oct. 30.

 

Third time a charm as CCSO finally catches elusive man

 

MIDDLEBURG – A man who twice evaded Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies earlier in the day was caught after he returned home to start another argument with a woman.

David Allen Johns, 32, of Middleburg, was charged with simple battery, child abuse and threating death or serious harm to a police officer after he was caught after deputies were summoned to the same house for the third time on Dec. 15 in response to a woman being slapped in the face and punched in the stomach.

Deputies found the woman with a red hand print on her face, but Johns already fled the scene. CCSO used a K-9, but it wasn’t able to pick up Johns’ scent.

Johns returned but was gone again by the time deputies arrived. A third call resulted in an arrest.

 

Orange Park man nabbed taking tools, grilling items from Sears

 ORANGE PARK – A 27-year-old man was caught unloading a shopping cart full of tools and grilling items into his car that were taken from Sears at the Orange Park Mall.

Steven Daniel Allen, of Orange Park, was arrested after mall security watched him put $4,199.64 worth of merchandise into a cart on Dec. 14 and take them directly to the parking lot. Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived in time to see him load the car.

He was charged with grand theft of more than $300, but less than $4,999.

 

Confidential informant used to catch woman during fentanyl bust

 ORANGE PARK – A 39-year-old woman was charged with selling fentanyl to a confidential informant working with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Linda June Padgett, of Orange Park, was charged Dec. 13 with selling or delivering $60 worth of fentanyl.

 

Shoplifter finally in jail for ripping off security devices at Target

 FLEMING ISLAND – A man was arrested for reportedly stealing a backpack filled with security systems and doorbell cameras last July, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.

Nathan Oliver Nordlum, 33, of Middleburg, was recognized by Target security on County Road 220 from a previous shoplifting case. CCSO said they caught him with a home security system, a pair of doorbell cameras and a Square credit card reader in a shopping cart.

According to the arrest report, he took the merchandise into the restroom before walking around the store for 90 minutes before leaving the store. When confronted by security, he dropped the backpack and his cellphone before leaving in a pickup truck.

The value of the stolen items was reported at $698.96.

He recently was arrested in Jacksonville and was sent back to Clay County on Dec. 13 to face charges.

 Man arrested for punching pregnant girlfriend in the mouth

 GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Green Cove Springs man was arrested Dec. 11 after Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies said he punched his pregnant girlfriend in the mouth.

Antonio Antwoye Cushenberry, 24, was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant woman after she said Cushenberry shoved her into a hallway and hit her with a closed fist during an argument. The woman said she was holding her daughter when she was punched.

Deputies reported the victim was bleeding from her mouth when they arrived. According to CCSO, the victim told her boyfriend a week earlier she was pregnant with his child.

 

Woman bruised, bloodied before a date by former boyfriend

 GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A woman was attacked by a former boyfriend as she stepped onto the porch for a date with another man, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.

Alvin J. Mercado Jr., 35, of Green Cove Springs, was charged with dating violence, simple battery and prowling on Dec. 11 after deputies said a woman was shoved into a wall while Mercado covered her mouth with his hand. The victim had a black eye, a cut below her right eye and bruises to the cheek and chin, CCSO reported.

 

Man critically injured after being hit by car on Blanding

 MIDDLEBURG – A 21-year-old Middleburg man suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a car Dec. 14 on Blanding Boulevard near County Road 218.

Jonny Powers was taken to Orange Park Medical Center after crossed the highway and stepped in front of a Chevrolet driven by Cladys Powers, 52, of Middleburg.

The accident is still being investigated and charges are pending, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
