GREEN COVE SPRINGS — The new school year brings a highly anticipated change for Clay High. The old asphalt track and field will be upended and replaced with synthetic surfacing.
Assistant Superintendent of Operations Bryce Ellis states that the renovations are in the first phase. The old asphalt has been cleared away in preparation for the synthetic surfacing.
A rubber surface is more desirable than asphalt for competitive and health reasons. The rubber surface provides shock absorption and cushioning during a runner's stride, which prevents injury and allows runners to give their best race along the entire 400-meter circumference.
Ellis said the second phase, lasting from October to December, provisions new accessible sidewalks and fencing around the track. She said the fencing is required to prevent the public from walking on the synthetic surface once installed.
The synthetic surfacing will be installed the following spring — ideally in time for the track and field season.
The project architect's cost estimate for the renovations is $558,130.
