FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High secured a key district win over Creekside with two second half goals en route to a 3-0 win Wed., Dec. 4 at Fleming Island High School. Fleming Island goalie Frank Rooney rejected a half dozen shots from corner kicks in the final four minutes to secure the shutout.

"We needed a good win to get us through the second half of the season," said Fleming Island coach Michael Green. "Frank held the shutout in goal and our speed up front led by Garrett Godfrey kept them off balance."

The win, which puts the Golden Eagles at 4-1-1, keeps the chase for the top spot in the district still a question mark with Fletcher unbeaten with an uncoming match against Fleming Island on Tues., Dec. 10 at Fletcher.

Fleming Island opened the game quickly with Dominic Leconte taking a long throw in from Nathan Testa in a crowd in front of the Creekside goal and sneaking a ball into upper left corner of the goal at 34:30 of the first half.

Both teams were able to move the ball quickly up and down the pitch, but Fleming Island goalie Frank Rooney thwarted a half dozen shots in the first half, then punched out three successive attempts in the final four minutes to secure the shutout.

"I'm just 6 foot, maybe 6'-1" on a good day, but we have had a couple of defenders out," said Rooney. "Our guy, Phipps (Logan Phipps), keeps things off the front. He's the lockdown defender in front of me."

In the second half, with the score still locked at 1-0, it was Garrett Godfreys sprinting to the baseline on the right side and bending in for a shot narrow shot on goal that got past the goalie, but was rejected by a Creekside defender that nearly got goal two.

On the rejected save, Logan Phipps found the ball on his left foot for a direct shot that zipped past the out of position goalie for goal two just after the second half water break.

"Garrett's ball looked like it went in and when it came back in, I had a good angle on the shot," said Phipps. "Our three guys up front keep the pace fast and that messes up the defenders trying to get back in front of their goal."

As time was about to expire, at 0:02 to go, Fleming Island was awarded a penalty shot from center field just above the 18 yard box that Logan Phipps converted after a little deception prior to the kick to end the game at 3-0.
