JACKSONVILLE - Going into Friday nights game, Fleming Island head coach Damenyum Springs, was hoping his team would come out ready to play.
“Last week against Buchholz we came out flat,” said Springs. “It cost us a chance to win the game.”
Running backs Timothy Thomas and Sam Singleton made sure that wasn’t going to happen.
Thomas rushed for a game-high 163 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns while Singleton added 125 yard rushing on 13 attempts and had two scores to power Fleming Island to a 35-14 victory over Atlantic Coast in a District 1-7A matchup at Stingray Bay on the Atlantic Coast campus.
“It is nice have two guys who can run the ball like they can, “ Springs said. “They can take it score on any play.”
The Golden Eagle (6-2; 4-1) game plan was pretty simple Friday night. The minute they got off the bus they were going to pound the ball with a bruising running attack.
Fleming Island marched 67 yards on 11 plays on its opening drive, culminating was on a Thomas eight yard touchdown run to grab a 7-0 lead. Thomas rushed six times for 30 yards on the drive.
On its next drive, Singleton busted a 68 yard touchdown run off the right end to give Fleming Island a 14-0 lead with 2:50 left in the quarter.
“We wanted to get out fast,” said Springs. “We wanted to get off the bus and make plays.”
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 21-0 advantage when they matriculated (Note: If anyone knows who made this word famous for football, I will buy you lunch) 85 yards on 11 plays culminating on a Thomas four yard run.
The Fleming Island offensive line of Cameron Longmire, Anthony Timpson, Michael Gloster, Rodarius Hendrickson and Timothy Lawrence dominated the line of scrimmage for most of the night that allowed for a big night on the ground.
The defense was led by junior defensive end Hunter Williams who recorded two sacks and had eight tackles while Darryl Nesmith added an interception.
Atlantic Coast (2-5) standout wide receiver Pat Bryant, an Illinois commit, had five catches for 76 yards including a 16 yard touchdown reception. Senior defensive back Darrius Harris drew the assignment of locking up Bryant.
“He is our top defensive back, “ Spring said. “ He was looking forward to playing against him. He did a good job.”
Fleming Island will host Tate from Cantonment, Florida on November 13th in the playoffs with a chance to advance to play Tallahassee Chiles.
“They look pretty good on film,” said Springs. “They don’t look like a 1-3 team.”
