FLEMING ISLAND — Although the school year has ended, that didn’t stop the academic recognition at the June 5 Clay County School Board meeting.
Here’s a rundown:
The school board was recognized for achieving certified board status. The prestigious certification reflects their dedication to effective governance, continued improvement and providing a positive educational environment within the school district.
Over 20 winners for the Len Mattiace Foundation’s Anti-Bullying Contest were rewarded $100, $500 or $1,000. The campaign challenged students to create a written paper, video, song or service project to represent the theme. Over 65 pieces were submitted by 96 students across the county.
Three educators were recognized for their Social Studies Teacher of the Year nominations: Lake Asbury Elementary’s Karen Steinmetz, Bannerman Learning Center’s Courtney Clanton and Fleming Island High’s Madison Johnson. Wilkinson Junior’s Barbara Mackenzie was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching History Award, Orange Park High’s Tammy Shannon was nominated for Warren Tracy Beginning Teacher Award and Ridgeview High’s Sharon Moore was nominated for the Clay Civics Champion Award.
Spring state champions, athletes and coaches of the month were also recognized. Fleming Island High’s Mikayla Shavers was the 3A State Champ for the triple jump for track and field. Oakleaf High’s Noah Shevchook was the 154 Traditional State Champ for boys weightlifting. Keystone Heights High’s Elijah Mize was the 119 Traditional State Champ for boys weightlifting. Athletes of the Month went to Middleburg High’s Ava Clinkscale, Keystone Heights High’s Erabelle Conant, Keystone Heights High’s Kadence Massey, Oakleaf High’s Charley Maddox and Fleming Island High’s Olivia Sikes.
Coaches of the month went to Oakleaf High’s Chris Foy, Middleburg High’s Rhiannon Weiskopf, Fleming Island High’s Sean Coultis, Orange Park High’s Michael Nesmith and Clay High’s Jared Moses.
