Clay Literacy Coalition ceases operations

ORANGE PARK – Due to lack of Board Members and lack of support from the community to help fund programs, the Clay County Literacy Coalition has closed, according to student/teacher coordinator Lynette Shaw.
“For the tutors that tutor students at the (Orange Park) Annex or an Adult Education student in the ABE/GED program or in the ESOL program, you can continue to tutor your student at the OP Annex,” Shaw said. “You will have to fill out a volunteer form. If you tutor a student from the community, you will be on your own and not under the CCLC organization umbrella. Please email your volunteer form back to me as soon as possible. We will be having a secure campus starting next week, so all tutors will have to check in at the front desk in Bldg. 17 if you come to the OP Annex campus.”
If you know of any organization that could use some workbooks and materials, or for information on the volunteer signup, contact Shaw at (904) 336-4456. CCLC will be donating materials to a local church or organization.

Smiles for Clay offers free dental services to students

CLAY COUNTY – The Smiles for Clay program offers preventative dental services at schools for second and fifth grade students.
The Department of Health-Clay can deliver in-school dental services, including assessments, sealants and fluoride varnish at no cost. Students must have a signed consent form found at clay.floridahealth.gov.

Greater Jacksonville Fair offers college scholarships

JACKSONVILLE – The Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair Association is currently accepting applications offering scholarships to students majoring or planning to major in agriculture, veterinary medicine or other fields of study this fall. Applications are currently being accepted and are due on Oct. 1.
To be eligible, a student must reside in either Clay, Duval, Baker, Bradford, Nassau or St. Johns county. At the time of application, the applicant must be at least a high school senior, enrolled or planning to enroll in a four-year university, junior college or technical institution.
The Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair Association has contributed over 2.6 million dollars for the past 64 years to local charities and awarded scholarships to worthy students who have exhibited a desire to further their education. The Association’s purpose in offering these scholarships is to encourage personal growth and assistance to qualified students planning to major in agriculture, veterinary medicine and other fields of study.
Scholarship funds are assigned to and administered by the winner’s college, university or technical institution. If the scholarship winner leaves school, any unused portion of the scholarship will be returned to the Jacksonville Fair.
Participation in this program is open to all individuals regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation or national origin. The winners will be chosen by the Scholarship Committee and will be awarded during the Nov. 7-17 Fair.
