GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Six disc golfers earned their spots at the U.S. Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, following the two-round Freebird Flyers Amateur Doubles qualifier at Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park. The 36-hole tournament was held on the Front and Rattlesnake Challenge courses, and despite stifling heat, the tandems of
Jonathan Crowe of Jacksonville and Kevin O’Donnell of Jacksonville Beach had a run of 11 birdies in 12 holes for a second-round score of 13-under-par 41 to finish at 23-under to tie Michael Rader of St. Marys, Georgia, and Joshua Young of Jacksonville. Mark Westwood of Orange Park and John Nall of Jacksonville were third at 17 under. The top three teams all qualified for the national tournament on Oct. 6-9. Middleburg’s Thomas Eden and Fleming Island’s C.J. Webb were fourth at 14-under.
