FLEMING ISLAND – St. Johns Country Day School golfer Rachel Thompson tied for first place with Ponte Vedra High’s Ashlan Tresca with both edging out Ponte Vedra High School’s Reni Janczik by one stroke to take top honors in a tri-meet between the Spartans, the Sharks and Fleming Island at the Fleming Island Golf Club.
Ponte Vedra, third in Class 2A last year with Jancsik, a junior, scoring a 77-79, 156 total for the Sharks, won the team title in the tri-meet with 177 points while Fleming Island, led by Alyssa Merrilees’ 49 edged St. Johns 231-233 for the runnerup spot.
Jancsik finished tied for the 13th at the Class 2A championship tournament in 2017.
Thompson, a senior, was part of Spartans second in district 4-1A team last year with Bolles the district and region champions. Bolles was seventh in Class 1A.
Merrilees and teammate Sarah Theus were both region qualifiers last year for Fleming Island.
At Eagle Harbor, Middleburg squared off with Ridgeview in a dual match with Bronco senior Victoria Greene returning to the greens after a freshman and sophomore invite to the Class 2A state meet and also leading Middleburg to back-to-back district titles.
Greene has match wins of 40 and 38 strokes as districts are scheduled for early October. Greene was 61st in 2016 and 53rd in 2015 in Class 2A.
