ORANGE PARK – Kaitlyn Perrine, 20, is enrolled in the Practical Nursing program at St. Johns River State College. This Middleburg High graduate will complete her yearlong career certificate this fall. Her next step will be to apply for the State Board Examination for Licensed Practical Nursing.

Here are her thoughts on her
career at SJR State:
What inspired your interest in nursing?
“I have always had a longing to help people and care for them in times of need, but my main source of inspiration came from the dedicated nurses who took care of my best friend throughout her battle with Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). The care and compassion she and her family received from the nurses made all the difference.”

Why did you select SJR State for your training?
“Along with being an affordable education, the SJR State nursing program has one of the highest passing rates for the NCLEX in the state.”

What do you like most about your nursing training?
“I appreciate how much hands-on training we receive throughout this program, from lifelike nursing manikins in class to actual experience in a variety of clinical settings.”

What do you find most challenging about the program?
“I find the tests to be the most challenging portion of this program. Although they are difficult, they are designed to prepare us for the critical thinking we will have to use in real-world scenarios.”

What advice would you give to those considering the program?
“Do it! It’s not always going to be easy, but the experiences, knowledge and memories will be something to be cherished throughout your nursing career.”

What are your career plans?
“I plan to continue my nursing education at SJR State. My career goal is to be a pediatric oncology nurse practitioner.”

Do you have any additional comments?
“When I was starting this program, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it this much. I feel like I am part of one big family in the practical nursing program. Everyone in the class is dedicated to helping one another succeed.
The Practical Nursing career certificate program at SJR State is designed for students to gain the knowledge and skills to qualify for entry-level positions in nursing. Applications will be available through May 31, 2022, for the fall semester.”
