Stratton, Allen take Hog Jog titles

LAKE ASBURY - St. Johns Country Day School junior cross country runner Matthew Stratton, fresh off a third place finish in the Class 1A cross country championship race last week in Tallahassee in about 16 minutes, cruised to a near two minute win at the Florida Striders Hog Jog 5K cross country race at Ronnie Van Zant Park on Saturday.

Stratton, who won in 18:29, finished nearly two minutes up on runner Justin Holstein, 35, who crossed the finish line in 20:12.

Third place was overall female champion Shelly Allen, 57, who had to battle with Clay High freshman Savannah Hill, her also fresh off a Class 2A cross country championship race last week, with Allen edging Hill by 11 seconds with a 21:35 split. Hill finished in 21:44, but led for part of the race.

Allen is a top world ranked masters runner mainly on the track and was nursing a minor injury en route to her return to the track.

Third male was Wlliam Sanders, 36, in 22:12 with the third female Stratton’s little sister, Rebecca, also a St. Johns runner, in 22:56.

There were 77 finishers in the annual event.
