Stratton, Skoglund win NAS Jax Runway 5K

JACKSONVILLE – Two of north Florida’s youngest running stars took the top spots at the NAS Jax Runway 5K road race on a sweltering Saturday morning that saw runners trek the air base flightline.

Matthew Stratton, a 15 year old sophomore cross country and track state medalist for St. Johns Country Day School, bested the much older field behind him in 16 minutes, 11 seconds as veteran Gary Myers of Orange Park chased him to take second in 16:50. In third was Bryan Neely, 24, in 17:09.

For the females, it was middle school ace Peyton Skoglund, 14, who finished 10th overall and out paced veteran Holly Sanford, 43, with a quick 19: 12 winning time the Sanford finishing at 20:11. Sanford finished 15th overall. Courtney Mason, 24, took third among the women in 21:04 for 19th place.

The race, staged by 1st Place Sports of Jacksonville, had 288 finishers.

In the age groups, winners for the males were Nick Rueda, 12, in 12-unders in 23:17 for 39th place; Jake Kailes, 16, in 13-18s in 18:56 for ninth place; Neeley in 19-24s for third place: Sterling Smith, 26, in 25-29s in 18:50 for eighth place; Tommy Shannon, 32, in 30-34s in 18:09 for fifth place; Robert Nogales, 36, in 35-39s in 19:18 for 12th place; Robert Anderson, 40, in 40-44s in 17:45 for fourth place; Myers in 45-49s; Lewis Preddy, 51, in 50-54s in 21:42 for 23rd place; Sean McCormack, 57, in 55-59s in 20:24 for 17th place; John Martin, 60, in 60-64s in 21:25 for 21st place; Tom Spargo, 66, in 65-69s in 24:11 for 51st place; Martin Wilkinson, 70, in 70-plus in 33:00 for 150th place.

For the women, age group winners were Brie Andrews, 12, in 12-Unders in 23:17 for 41st place; Anna Wilson, 13, in 13-18s in 23:13 for 37th place; Mason in 19-24s for 19th place; Keri Nakajima, 28, in 25-29 in 22:19 for 28th place; Katie Kessler, 33, in 30-34s in 23:27 for 44th place; Tabitha Williams, 35, in 35-39s in 25:49 for 69th place; Sanford 40-44s; Amy Bonnette, 46, in 45-49s in 22:59 for 34th place; Dena Gaucher, 51, in 50-54s in 23:16 for 38th place; Alic Ciano, 56, in 55-59s in 23:57 for 50th place; Peggy Morris, 61, in 60-64s in 36:38 for 183rd place; Diane Wilkinson, 66, in 65-69s in 36:54 for 186th place; and Carol Riley, 70, in 70-Plus in 27:42 for 94th place.

Next race is July 4th, the Celebration 5K at the Baymeadows Road 1st Place Sports store. with the Vestcor Bridge Run scheduled for Sat., July 20.
