MIDDLEBURG – Orange Park High wideout Jacie Ankrom caught a 60 yard scoring pass with six seconds left on the clock to tie the score at 28-28 with Ridgeview High and send the rivalry clash into overtime.

In a rare, four-downs from the 20 yard line overtime segment to determine a winner, Ridgeview quarterback Brittany Sutton hit wideout Trenity Gilford on a swing pass to score first with Sutton taking a read option right in for the the extra point giving the Panthers back the lead at 35-28.

Orange Park came up to bat for their four downs and immediately got a score from an Ankrom pass to Caroline Hudgens, but the extra point fell a yard shy; a pass to Nayeli Williams to give Ridgeview a thrilling 35-34 win as area flag football teams sharpen up for the upcoming district tournaments April 22-23.

At Ridgeview, the Panthers fell behind 21-7 in the first half off three scores from Ankrom before Sutton found running back JhaTarra Sampson with a 25 yard strike to put the score at 21-14 with 25 seconds before the half.

On the first play of the third period, Sutton again found Sampson for a 25 yard strike that Sampson carried to the Raider five yard line. From there, Naira Matos used a nifty spin move to break free and find the end zone to tie the game with Sutton’s PAT run at 21-21 with just two minutes off the clock.

With Ankrom switching off at quarterback with Hudgens and Nayeli Williams, Orange Park’s offense seemed intent on letting Ankrom use her speed to break the Panther defense, but fumbled snaps and incomplete passes thwarted the Raider efforts.

Orange Park got an interception in the fourth from Khaleela Restall with the score still at 21-21, but Sampson almost came up with an interception that forced a Raider punt.

With time clicking down to 23 seconds and Sutton moving the Panthers to the Raider 20, Sutton found Gilford between two defenders for the go-ahead score with Sutton’s PAT putting the game at 28-21.

Ankrom missed a first down attempt downfield just off her fingertips but got free two downs later with her 60 yarder for a 28-27 with Hudgens outleaping the Panther defense for the tying PAT, 28-28.

At Middleburg High, Clay High, 7-0 and ranked ninth in the top 25 All Classes poll and third in Class 1A, stayed unbeaten with a 19-0 first half lead off three methodically orchestrated offensive series directed by quarterback Ciena Zino to eventually beat Middleburg 33-0. Zino worked the Blue Devil offense downfield with short slant passes to Abby Hawkins, Alexis Stilianou and Paolo Jorge Silva before hitting Brookly McClain for the first score on third and goal from the five. A 15 yarder to Hawkins put the Blue Devils inside the Bronco five yard line.

Down 6-0, Middleburg just missed on double pass play and was forced to punt.

Zino stayed with short, quick passes just over the Bronco defensive line before speedy wideout Skye Paradise found herself alone in front of the Bronco bench for a 40 yard scoring play and a 13-0 Clay lead.

Clay third first half score was a scoring pass to Hawkins on a slant from the Bronco five.

Clay kept the offense moving in the second half to the 33-0 final.

At Fleming Island High on Friday, the Golden Eagles put their unbeaten record to the test against arguably one of the best teams in the Florida Panhandle with Florida High out of Tallahassee; unbeaten at 7-0 and ranked 14th last week in the all classes ranks of Florida High School Football. Florida, 8-0 and now ranked 13th state wide, won 19-0. Fleming Island still stays in the FloridaHSfootball.com rankings at 20 at 5-1.
