• Clay County Emergency Management officials were monitoring the progress of Hurricane Frances as it approached the east coast of Florida. It was forecasted to make landfall in Northeast Florida.
• One of three men who burst into a home was shot to death by a man who was playing a card game with friends. Obryan Crawford, 20, was killed, while Marcus D. Crawford and James E. Whitfield were arrested were arrested a week later on unrelated charges.
• Mark Thompson of Middleburg was arrested following a two-year investigation by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office into a series of ATV thefts.
30 years ago, 1994
• The Clay County School District overpaid $1.6 million in insurance premiums to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and plans to issue refund checks to plan members.
• The Board of County Commissioners fire assistant county attorney Fran Moss.
• Wilkinson Junior High unveiled a new 32,000-square-foot building for high-tech science, demonstration and art classrooms and a suite of rooms for Exceptional Student Education Programs.
40 years ago, 1984
• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol were on the lookout for Billy Ray Brown of Jacksonville. He was accused of DUI, stealing a car, crashing into a retention pond and leaving the scene of an accident on Bolton Road.
• Two Clay County candidates ask the Florida Secretary of State to send officials to monitor polling precincts during the election.
• The Florida Department of Transportation said it will complete Blanding Boulevard’s 2.7-mile, $3.7 million widening project in December.
