• The Orange Park Nuisance Abatement Board gives Roadway Inn and Conference Center owner Jitendra Patel until Dec. 11 to comply with an order to close following moneys of fire and safety code violations, as well as repeated reports of crime.

• The Miller family – Hazel, C.J., Chase and Robert “Spanky” – move into their new home built by Habitat for Humanity in Middleburg. The family invested more than 500 sweat equity hours of their own during construction.

• Clay County’s director animal care and control, Jennifer Broadhurst, accepts a job to develop a shelter medicine program at the University of Wisconsin.

• Clay High southpaw pitcher Kyle Bird becomes the first athlete in school history to sign a national letter of intent to play at Florida State.

• The Fleming Island High football team beats Orange Park, 33-7, to finish the regular season with a 10-0 record.

• Clay High swimmer Kaityln Dressel wins the 50- and 100-meter dashes at the Class 2A state swim meet in Orlando.

20 years ago, 2000

• J. Scott Walker, a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, is selected to lead the Clay County Chamber of Commerce.

• Nearly 74% of Clay County voters approve a referendum that puts term limits on Clay County Commissioners.

• The Clay High football team clinches a spot in the Class 3A playoffs with a 10-0 victory over Jacksonville Ribault.

30 years ago, 1990

• Residents of the Magnolia Springs area ask the Board of County Commissioner to install a traffic light at U.S. Highway 17 and Haven Avenue.

• Three men are arrested after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said they broke into the Auto Sound Specialists in Orange Park and stole about $30,000 worth of care stereos and electronics.

• The annual rivalry game between the Orange Park and Middleburg football teams was replayed on Clay Cablevision Channel 17.

40 years ago, 1980

• The Clay County Commission hires Dr. Jack Jarcyk of the Orange Park Community Hospital to help set up the Advance Life Support rescue team.

• The School Board swears in new members George Bush and Jean Varga, as well as incumbents Charles McGlave and Martha Maxwell.

• Commissioners decide to hike the county’s millage rate from 5.736 to 6.736 during its budget workshop.
