KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – Six new pickleball courts are coming to Twin Lakes Park in Keystone Heights.

The long-awaited project was first proposed in 2020 when the local pickleball group asked County Commissioner Betsy Condon if pickleball courts could be added to the park.

“When I first took office in November of 2020, the pickleball group from here in Keystone Heights reached out to me about whether (we) could we do some sort of renovations of the courts there,” Condon said.

The plans for the new pickleball courts involve repaving and restriping the park’s previous courts. In addition, the courts will have a net placed based on the pickleball guidelines. Construction should start soon and be completed within four-to-five months.

The overall reaction to the new courts was positive. The local pickleball group, which consists of about 24 people, is excited about the completion of the project. “It’s outstanding. Hopefully, we’ll have a tournament.” Said Todd, one of the pickleball players.

Another player said that the group is glad that the courts are coming to Twin Lakes.

“I get emails monthly if not weekly asking when we can get started on the construction. They have been patient with us about finding a contractor. They knew the money is allocated, but they are really excited about it,” Condon said.

In addition, she hopes the new courts will expand the world of pickleball to others and encourage them to be active.

“I can see it becoming more of a bigger group than it is,” Condon said.

The non-strenuous sport combines the elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and it can be played by all ages.

“Older people can get out and play. Kids can play with parents and grandparents,” another pickleball player, Regina, said.

The sport offers health, emotional and social benefits to the player.

“It’s great cardio,” said another player, Ed “It just makes the day better, you leave happy.”

As of now, Little Rain Lake and Sunrise Park are the two parks in Keystone Heights that have pickleball courts.
