Faith walk: True investment

One of my most enjoyable pastimes is following the University of North Carolina basketball team. The team is the “Tar Heels,” and they have an illustrious history of successful basketball. They are considered one of the elite basketball programs in the nation. As a native Tar Heel myself, I have followed this program for many years.

Right now, the national basketball tournament is in progress to determine the national champion. The last time I was in North Carolina to see my team play, I went to the Tar Heels Basketball Museum. A lot of what I saw in the museum was a reminder to me of things I already knew. Most of the players featured there were known to me. I remembered many of them that I have seen play over the years.

Even though I had seen them play many times, this occasion was special. It was “Seniors Night” and all the graduating seniors on the team were recognized at the beginning and the end of the game. That is a tradition with this athletic program. All the seniors had played basketball on this team for the entire four years of their college lives.

After the games, when the seniors were brought forward to speak to the crowd, they said very little about basketball. Most of what they said concerned the investment the coaches had made in their lives. They had been mentored and taught the valuable lessons of life. They spoke of the closeness they had developed between them as young men and the coaches and how they were prepared to be men in the course of life. A true investment had been made in their lives and they recognized it with appreciation.

I realize God has made a great investment in me. He sent the Holy Spirit became my mentor, guide, teacher, helper, comforter. I thank for this!

All of us will have opportunities to mentor and guide others. If we accept the challenging opportunity, it will require time, effort and dedication. But we can change a life by the unselfish effort we put forth if we are willing to invest ourselves in the life of another person.
