CLAY COUNTY – The political divide seemed to narrow Saturday night when a man tried to assassinate presidential candidate Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Political representatives and national, local and local officials expressed concerns about a gunman who fired shots from a rooftop that struck Trump’s ear, killed a man on the stage and severely injured two other attendees without injecting their political bias about the upcoming General Election on Nov. 5.
“God Bless America to all injured today,” was posted on Sheriff Michelle Cook’s Facebook page. “Thankful for all law enforcement who ran towards the sound of gunfire.”
The shooter was on a nearby rooftop, not on the rally property, according to Secret Security. Once he opened fire, Secret Service agents quickly returned fire and killed him. How he gained such a tactical advantage isn’t clear.
Trump posted on his website, Truth Social, “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
President Joe Biden said his campaign will suspend its campaign messaging and commercials for the short term following the assassination attempt. He also made a national statement, saying, “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. That’s one reason why we have to reunite this country.”
Trump’s campaign staff said his injury will not keep him from attending this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump will officially accept the Republican party nomination on Thursday, July 18.
