Udell, Collier show off game speed

ORANGE PARK -No surprises for Orange Park High football coach Tom Macpherson as speedster Alex Collier showed a bit of his track speed for a dethrottled 45 yard scoring sweep and wideout Stewart Udell snared a Vince Walker sideline pass and made his way to paydirt in quick fashion as the Raiders scrimmaged amongst themselves Friday night at Orange Park High School.

"Those guys are expected to be able to get downfield quickly," said Orange Park coach Tom Macpherson. "Our job as coaches is to design a scheme to help the linemen and downfield receivers to make that happen."

A third score came off a strong 40 yard right side sweep play to sophomore Terrance Johnson, a smaller version of former Raider great Terrance Johnson (?, big brother).

On offense, senior quarterback Vince Walker looked sharp in the air despite a handful of drops by his wide receivers and the shifty signalcaller got loose a few times for additional yards off scrambles.

"It's a little disappointing that we work to get Vincent looks to throw, he makes the good throw and the ball is dropped," said Macpherson. "I stress that players have to do their jobs."

On defense, no surprise that the defensive tandem of Kendy Charles at end and Jacob Moore at tackle were in the backfield more than the offensive players.

"Safety Spencer Kirkham and, also Cameron Broughton, had good position on defense and kept things within our plan," said Macpherson. "Most teams look for 3-4 seconds in the pocket, but with Kendy and Jacob, we want to lower that significantly and hopefully we'll get opportunities."

Tranferred defensive back Parris Taylor, from Ridgeview High, snagged an interception on the sideline for one defensive highlight.

"With our rush, our perimeter guys can hold guys in our zone coverage and look into the backfield," said Macpherson. "Parris has stepped up learning our game."

Orange Park travels to West Nassau on Fri., Aug. 16 for their preseason game before opening the season with Oakleaf coming to Orange Park High School.
