INDIANAPOLIS – Caeleb Dressel won the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials Saturday night, and the Clay High graduate was cheered on by friends, family and fans at the Watch Party at the Church of Eleven22 on Fleming Island.
Dressel will be competing in his third Olympic Games. He will participate in four events: the 4 X 100 relay, the 50 freestyle, the 100 butterfly and the 4 X 100 medley.
His winning time in the 100 fly was 50.19 seconds, well off his world record of 49.45 seconds, but was good enough to beat 17-year-old Thomas Heilman by a half body length.
Dressel, 27, won a USA-best five gold medals at the Toyko Games in 2000. Counting the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dressel has won seven gold medals.
The Summer Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to Aug. 11. Swimming events will be held at Paris La Defense Arena from July 27 to Aug. 4.
