Stuart Jamieson, Fleming Island High School, Class of 2013
Stuart Jamieson, a two-time swim Most Valuable Player for Fleming Island High School, is now an Ensign Student Naval Aviator with the U.S. Navy. Jamieson, pictured with a T-6B Texan II airplane used for primary flight training at NAS Whiting Field in Milton, FL, has been selected to fly the P-8 Poseidon as part of the VT-3 Red Knights at NAS Jax.
“I am moving to Corpus Christi, Texas for advanced flight training,” said Jamieson. “Once I complete that, I’ll have earned my wings as an official Naval Aviator and move back to Jacksonville to learn how to fly the P-8 at NAS Jax.”
Jamieson, at state meet swimmer in 2011 and 2012 in 100 breastroke (6th in 2012) and the 200 individual medley (9th in 2012), swam four years at Florida Tech University in Melbourne before joining the Navy in 2018.
“I wanted to go to the Naval Academy or Air Force Academy. Applied twice and didn’t get in. After college decided to apply to Navy Officer Candidate School and I got in. I wanted to serve since I was a kid. Growing up in a big Navy town made me want to join the fight.” – Stuart Jamieson
Shelby Griffis, Clay High,
softball, golf now an EMT
Shelby Griffis, 24, Clay High softball and golf, continued her softball pitching at Eastern Florida State College, St. Johns River State College and Chowan University before finishing at the Fire Academy of the South and becoming a Jacksonville EMT/Firefighter in 2020.
Griffis finished Chowan with a 2.97 Earned Runs Average with 97 strikeouts with a 15-6 won/lost record. Griffis was part of two conference championships at Chowan. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry.
“I decided to become a firefighter because I did some ride alongs with my step father, he is a Rescue Lieutenant for JFRD. I found my love for helping people and doing my part for the community by shadowing my stepdad.”
