Zapp aces scholarship to UNC

FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High School senior tennis ace Logan Zapp, one of the best tennis players in Florida as well as the USA, signed his letter of intent to continue playing at the University of North Carolina.

"We are thrilled to welcome Logan to Caroline," said North Carolina head coch Sam Paul. "He is a hard-working and very talented student athlete who matches our program's culture well."

North Carolina is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCAA with a 6-0 record. The Tar Heels were ranked fourth in the 2020 preseason Oracle/ITA Division I Men's rankings, released January 8, with Florida number one, then Texas, Southern California and North Carolina. The Tar Heels, who finished seventh ranked last year, have played in the NCAA Final Four in two of the last three seasons and return seven lettermen this year.

Academically, Zapp completed the AICE program in three years at Fleming Island and received the Principal's Scholar Award.

Zapp, a 6'-3" native of Fleming Island, is coached by former collegiate star Mark Arrowsmith. Zapp is ranked No. 1 in the USTA 18s in both singles and doubles.

"For me, North Carolina was simply the gest combination of academics and tennis in the country," said Zapp. "The family atmosphere made me feel very welcom. I'm excited to continue to develop my game for a possible career in professional tennis and to earn a degree from one of the best schools in the world."

In singles in 2019, Zapp won the Winter Nationals and was a finalist in the USTA National Clay Courts Tournament.

Currently, Zapp is ranked No. 12 by Tennisrecruiting.net.

As a 16 year old, Zapp was No. 1 ranked and was crowned champion in singles and doubles at the Boys 16s National Clay Court Championships.

Zapp was named 2018 Junior Player of the Year in Florida.

In his junior season at Fleming Island, Zapp led the Golden Eagles to the region finals before losing to George Steinbrenner in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament. Zapp advanced in the individual singles as top player for Fleming Island and eventually lost in the overall singles final to state champion Daniel Krulig of Coral Gables.
