CLAY COUNTY — Five Clay County seniors were honored with $50,000 worth of scholarship funds during a Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.

Oakleaf High's Shamyra St. Hilaire; Middleburg High's Caroline (McKinzy) Alexander and Chloe Toney; Ridgeview High's Brenna Finnegan; and Fleming Island High's Savannah Garriot each received $10,000 in post-secondary educational scholarships sponsored by Waste Management — the largest sustainability company in North America.

County commissioners joined Waste Management Senior Account Executive Greg Huntington in awarding the students.

“WM is proud to partner with Clay County to support these five students as they take the next step in their education,” Huntington said. “Recognizing and supporting local students is an important way we contribute to the strength and future of the community.”

The county had 49 applications submitted this year, an increase from last year's 35. It was open to all Clay County high school seniors pursuing higher education at two-or-four-year colleges or technical schools. The scholarship recipients were chosen by a joint committee of Waste Management and Clay County staff members.

In addition to completing a personal essay, applicants were evaluated based on academic performance, grade-point average and demonstrated community service.

“These students exemplify the values of perseverance, service, and academic achievement,” said Chair Kristen Burke. “We congratulate them on this well‑deserved recognition and wish them continued success as they pursue their college goals."
