Advent’s quilt sale set for Saturday

ORANGE PARK – The Advent Lutheran Church will showcase colorful creations to raise money for charity this Saturday.

The church’s annual quilt sale will be making its return. According to the church website, guests can expect unique designs, quality craftsmanship and a variety of quilt sizes.

Leader of the Advent Quilters group, Marty Smith, said they would sell affordable, handmade quilts, but guests can look through a collection of other handmade products such as table toppers, wall-hangings and Christmas ornaments. Women involved in the church’s quilters group make everything in the sale.

“These are just things that are created out of our imagination and supplies,” Smith said.

Community Engagement Director Courtney Horton said that the funds raised from the sale will go toward various charities around the community.

In addition, Smith said the proceeds generated from the sale will also benefit the Lutheran World Relief. This foundation aids in the distribution of quilts around the world, specifically in third-world countries. With the help of the funds, Smith said the group is able to buy the supplies needed to make the quilts.

Smith added the relief has sent quilts to places enduring recent crises, such as Ukraine and Turkey. She said the Middle East will probably be next up on the list.

“We send our quilts to a warehouse in Maryland. And, from Maryland, they ship them wherever they’re most needed around the world,” Smith said.

The fundraiser began about 30 years ago to help people in need and has only grown since.

“At first, it was just handmade quilts that we gave to…members of the congregation…and over the years, it has grown to provide quilts for a lot of other places that need them,” Smith said.

Smith said she encourages the public to come out, enjoy the sale, and learn more about getting active with the quilters group. Horton noted that by purchasing an item, the community is helping to assist with a good cause.

“Advent quilters are doing a community service for the people of Orange Park. We’re not only taking these donations, we’re actually taking what has been donated to our congregation and giving back,” Horton said.

The sale will take place Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m at the Advent Lutheran Church on Loch Rane Boulevard.
