GREEN COVE SPRINGS – More than 60 Boston butts were sold during a presale event last Saturday where The Vineyard Transitional Center will soon house 12 released Clay County Jail inmates. A year ago, Pastor John Sanders and Joseph Smith sold 600 smoked butts, with the money supporting the center’s building fund. He hopes to exceed that number this year. “It was a good turnout, so we’re very pleased,” Sanders said. “We want to get an early count on how many we’re going to need this year.” The old center was demolished after engineers said it would cost more to refurbish the building at 518 Pine St. than to build a new one. The center will provide housing and support for inmates who’ve already spent months in a transitional program in the jail. In addition to helping them find employment, Sanders said the men will be enrolled in classes to teach them life skills to reduce the chance of recidivism. Butts will be delivered to businesses on Nov.17 and individuals can pick up their orders on Nov. 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Butts can be ordered at TheVineyardTransitionalCenter.org or by calling Sanders at (904) 305-4641 or Smith at (904) 343-1869.
