ORANGE PARK – The Art Guild of Orange Park established a scholarship in 2002 for Clay County high school seniors who want to pursue a career in visual arts or art education. In 2013, the Art Guild named this scholarship in honor of prominent local artist Courtenay Hunt following his death at 95. He was a founding member of the Art Guild.
Hunt was recognized as Jacksonville’s portrait artist in the 50s and 60s. In 1967, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Andrew Jackson, which still hangs in Jacksonville’s City Hall.
This year’s $1,000 scholarship application is now available online at artguildoforangepark.org and in each school’s guidance office. The deadline for the application is April 1. Applicants will also present a portfolio of their work at an interview with the AGOP Scholarship Committee in April.
Other scholarship award considerations are the applicant’s academic record, extracurricular activities, employment, community service, awards and recommendations.
In addition, the Art Guild will award the winner’s art teacher $100 for art supplies for the classroom.
