ORANGE PARK — Barco-Newton YMCA lifeguard Luke Klingenberg thought he might be able to break the 16-minute barrier for the Florida Striders' Run to the Sun 5K on Saturday, April 18.
With the Fleming Island High boys track team that just rocked their district championship meet on Friday, Klingenberg, 25, took advantage of the possibility that Fleming Island track coach Dave Allen would not unleash his boys on the course.
With due respect to their elder run comrade, the Fleming Island boys held back, posed for a pre-finish photo and gave Klingenberg the win in a 16 minute, 14 second time with four Fleming Island boys about 40 seconds behind him.
From the Fleming Island track crew, distance aces JP Strombeck, Marcos Serrano and Luke Janke came up with 16:50 finishes with Ryder Muyres, 15, the fourth Golden Eagle in at 17:34.
Orange Park super 35-year-old Josue Velazquez ran a swift 18:21 for first in his age group and seventh overall among the high schoolers with 29-year-old Austin Sisk sixth overall in 18:06.
For the females, two local area stalwarts, Kendal Casey, 31, and Kathy Daniels Pearman, 51, came down River Road just prior to the left turn into the Best Bet service road with Pearman about two strides up on Casey.
After the turn, Casey put surge in and edged Pearman with a 19:45 to 19:47 turnout in one of the closest finishes of the morning.
In age group action, 11-year-old Jewlie Beach edged Green Cove Springs Junior High softball champion Cassidy Danisovszky, 13, 22:34-23:14, while Fleming Island High trackster Eve Schlotthauer, 15, in female 14-19, got a 27 second edge on teammate Karissa Lou for the Fleming Island High girls' team.
In the age group as well was Fleming Island High two-time diving state champion Ava Brinkman, 18, who was fifth. Brinkman's sister Ellie, 25, was fourth in her age group with Ava holding the family trophy 28:54 to 29:03.
Race officials had some difficulty with the proper pronunciation of the Female 10-Under first and second place finishers with Darcyh Danisovszky, 9, edging sister Phoebe Danisovzsky, 7, 27:25 to 31:10.
