Blue Devils roll in flag football bonanza

MIDDLEBURG - There was hot, steamy weather, a bit of lightning, but, nonetheless, some outstanding high school flag football squeezed in between lightning rounds on day one as the Clay High Blue Devils flag football team dominated to the tune of 87-0 for three games of scoring as Airstreams Ventures staged the first Clash at the Creeks flag football tournament Friday and Saturday at the Clay County Regional Park in Middleburg.

Clay, undefeated and unscored upon thus far with their 5-0 season record, blew up games of 14-0 over Tocoi Creek and 26-0 over St. Augustine after a 60-minute lightning delay Friday night, then a 47-0 romp of Ribault on Saturday.

Clay's Saturday win featured two pick-six interceptions for touchdowns—Charlotte Glavin and freshman Makayla Clark—as the stingy Blue Devil air defense kept Ribault at bay for most of the game. Ava Gerush had the final touchdown for the halftime 41-0 score against Ribault on a nifty left side jet sweep run.

Middleburg, who lost a 12-0 game to Orange Park on Friday, joined the Clash at the Creeks and got into one of the more exciting games with a 12-6 overtime loss to Tocoi Creek on Saturday. The game was tied at 6-6 after regulation time forced a structured overtime of a 10-yard start for four downs that saw Tocoi Creek score off a sideline pass to wide receiver Anneliese Herrera. Herrera also scored off a last play of the half 45-yard touchdown bomb that tied the game at 6-6.

Middleburg returned quickly to the field after the Tocoi loss and beat Ribault 25-0. In other games, Lyman of Orlando lost, 20-7, to St. Augustine, then beat Tocoi Creek, 18-7.

Middleburg had a final game before Spring Break against Ridgeview on March 10. Fleming Island also traveled to undefeated (5-0) Bartram Trail on March 10.

Bartram Trail has racked up games of 43-6, 24-6 and 35-0 in their last three games.

Orange Park flag football, with basketball ace Ella Crowe as quarterback now, is 5-1 with their win over Middleburg and a 28-0 win over Keystone Heights and traveled to Yulee on March 10, then hosted Clay on March 12.

Keystone Heights, now 2-2, lost to Orange Park, then lost a 25-13 game to Palatka and hosted Bradford on March 12.

Oakleaf, at 2-2, lost 21-12 to Middleburg and 20-7 to St. Augustine and will come back after Spring Break with University Christian on March 26.

Fleming Island back in W column

The Fleming Island High girls' flag football team got a convincing win over Ridgeview High Thursday night with a 26-0 win at home. Their 2026 season record now stands at 2-2 with a 7-0 loss to undefeated Bolles last week.

On the Lady Eagles' first possession, sophomore QB Micah Bussey connected with Seven Gourdet on an 18-yard TD pass. Daisy Fletcher scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, while Tara Adams ran for the extra point. It was 13-0.
With 31 seconds to go in the first half, Adams threw to Gourdet for a 6-yard TD pass. QB Mattie Cunningham threw to Fletcher for the extra point, and it was 19-0 at the half.

In the fourth quarter, it was Cunningham throwing seven yards to Gourdet for a TD and the 26-0 final. Linebacker Fletcher had 10 tackles for the night and ranks among the best in Florida at her position.
