MIDDLEBURG - Middleburg High's baseball team had a 6-0 lead, lost it to 8-6, then went down to 13-7, then got a homer from Dylan Taylor after a Bradford County double play cleared the bases, but answered with a single and double and second single to put the score at 13-12 in a flash in the sixth.
Bradford wasn't ready to stop and responded with a triple and single to go back up 15-12 into the seventh and Bronco fans barely able to breathe.
Three straight singles; Nathan Austin, Logan Wehrmeyer and Johnny DeAntonis, a pop out to Dylan Taylor and then a single to Cole Conte got the Broncos to 15-13, plus three walks got the Broncos up 16-15 and a final single by Logan Alessi to 19-15.
Bradford again scared the "bejeebers" out of Cuchoyt with a two run homer to 19-17, but DeAntonis on the mound got a grounder and strikeout to end the bat-fest.
Not far away from Bradford County, at Bishop Snyder, the high-octane, but unpredictable Ridgeview High Lady Panthers softball team got a homer and 10 strikeouts from pitcher Saige Bialek to hold off a Snyder comeback to win 8-7 against the 10-3 and 20th ranked in 2A Cardinals.
The win was only the fourth for Panther coach Angela Agurkis, who just two weeks ago beat 14th ranked Yulee in the Oakleaf Tournament of Champions.
"Bishop Snyder has a good little squad, they know how to fight," said Agurkis. "They have a hitter, I think, Gotto, who was a heck of a hitter."
For Agurkis, Gotto rapped up with a solo homer and RBI double, but her girls; Nichole Deschamps smacked an RBI triple in the third with Bialek capping off a three run seventh inning; a double from Deschamps, an RBI single from Hannah Smith and Bialek's two-run dinger to put Ridgeview up 8-7.
Bialek slowed the Cardinal seventh inning with two grounders and a fly ball.
Also on Monday, March 31, Middleburg thrashed Fletcher 11-0 with 11 hits; one a Isabel Pifer homer to move to 10-5 after a 2-0 loss to Baker County. The Lady Broncos were ranked No. 3 in Class 5A.
St. Johns Country School got six runs in the fifth inning to beat Georgia power Lowndes County 7-2. St. Johns hosts Richmond Hill, also of Georgia, on Wednesday, April 2.
Ridgeview improved to 7-9 with an 11-1 win over Eagle's View with five runs in the first inning with an RBI double from Gabe Torres putting two runs on the board.
Orange Park lost an 8-2 game to Tocoi Creek with Tocoi Creek getting 16 strikeouts on the Raider batting lineup.
